Cemetery closes doors to eclipse watchers

WOWT) - The Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance Nebraska issued a statement today asking that eclipse watchers refrain from setting up shop in the cemetery. The city of Alliance is one of several communities expecting large crowds for the solar eclipse.The Nebraska Veterans Cemetery wishes to inform the public that the parking spaces at the cemetery is reserved for families visiting their loved ones. Cemetery employees will be at the front gate to welcome visitors and direct them to designated viewing locations in Alliance. To avoid confusion the cemetery entrance gates will be closed Sunday August 20th at 9:00 p.m. until Monday August 21st at 8:00 a.m.

The addition will be 1,256 square feet in size, 13 feet high and 25 feet wide, with two 9-foot-high smokestacks atop the building.All Faiths Cemetery, at 7 Island Road, is operated by the Swedish Cemetery Corp., which dates back to 1885. A crematory was built at the cemetery in 1983.Amanda Reich, a lawyer representing the cemetery operator, said the project has already received approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection.ZBA board member Vadim Michajlow pointed out that there are homes in the area and expressed concerns about what the impact to the surrounding neighborhood might be in terms of air quality and odors.Ms. Reich said the two new smokestacks that will be part of the addition will be an improvement over what exists now.Since the crematory was built nearly 35 years ago, she said, technology designed to prevent excess smoke and odors coming from the smokestacks has become much more efficient."There will be some increase as a result of having the addition, but over time they've really improved the process," Ms. Reich said.She added that DEP reviews the crematory's operations annually.All Faiths Cemetery abuts Leesville Pond and the nearest home is more than 100 feet away, according to Ms. Reich.
